NOTRE-DAME DE FRANCE
Notre-Dame de France, Virgin and Child of 22 meters located in Le Puy-en-Velay, was born in 1860 from the iron of 213 guns taken at Sevastopol.
At the time, she was the "super-synthesis" of the interests of the Church, the army, the French Empire, industry and tourism. A scarlet, metal and penetrable giantess, virgin, mother, and queen, between mercy and domination. Climbing into her head is to contemplate the landscape she permanently occupies. To enter into her history is to perceive, under the bloody and reactionary straitjacket, the rumblings of emancipation.
Through an exhibition, a film and a performance, the statue narrates her genesis, marked by the bubbling of metal and military and religious fantasies, weaving a history of forms, symbols and their political stakes. From a critical and feminist perspective, her narrative focuses on mythological and popular representations, on attempts at sedition, pertaining to the anthropology of a male and patriarchal gaze.

À l’époque, elle est la « super-synthèse » des intérêts de l’Église, de l’armée, de l’Empire français, de l’industrie et du tourisme. Une apparition écarlate, métallique et pénétrable, vierge, mère et reine, entre miséricorde et domination. Monter dans sa tête, c’est contempler le paysage qu’elle occupe en permanence. Rentrer dans son histoire, c’est aussi percevoir, sous le carcan sanglant et réactionnaire, les grondements d’une émancipation.
À travers une exposition, un film et une performance, la statue narre sa genèse, marquée par le bouillonnement du métal et les fantasmes militaires, religieux, tissant une histoire des formes, des symboles, et de leurs enjeux politiques. Dans une perspective critique et féministe, son récit s'attache aux représentations mythologiques et populaires, aux tentatives de sédition, participant de l’anthropologie d’un regard masculin et patriarcal.
